COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A man accused of raping and impregnating a 9-year-old Ohio girl who traveled to Indiana for an abortion was ordered held without bond Thursday by a judge who cited overwhelming evidence and the fact that he apparently is living in the U.S. illegally.

Gerson Fuentes, 27, faces two counts of raping the girl, who turned 10 before having the abortion in a case that has become a flashpoint in the national discussion about access to the procedure since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. He has pleaded not guilty.

A man who accosted U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin on stage as the Republican campaigned for governor will remain in custody while a federal judge considers his lawyer’s plea to release the Army veteran, who he said was in an alcoholic relapse. David Jakubonis faces a federal count of assaulting a member of Congress with a dangerous weapon for the attack July 21 in the Rochester area. The charge carries a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. At a detention hearing Thursday, a prosecutor argued Jakubonis should be held as a danger to the community who lunged at a congressman with a dangerous weapon.

Since her breakthrough role as Vanessa in the film adaptation of “In The Heights,” Melissa Barrera has been working non-stop on the big and small screen. Starting Thursday, she can be seen in “Keep Breathing,” a Netflix miniseries about a woman battling the elements as the lone survivor of a plane crash in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. It’s a wide variety of roles for the Mexican-born Barrera, one of very few actresses defying what roles a Latina can play amidst the lack of representation discussion in Hollywood. She calls the series a “survival show about surviving your mind, surviving your insecurities, your childhood traumas.”

An ailing manatee that was found and rehabilitated in Texas late last year is now in Florida after being flown from Texas on a cargo plane. The Dallas Cowboys have signed receiver and kick returner KaVontae Turpin, the former TCU player who was kicked off the team in 2018 before pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend. Turpin is coming off an MVP season with the New Jersey Generals in the rebirth of the United States Football League. The 25-year-old led the league in receiving yards. Turpin was one of the best kick returners in the nation while at TCU. He was arrested after witnesses told police they saw Turpin drag his girlfriend across a parking lot as she resisted and screamed for them to call 911.

Aaron Rodgers says he expects the Green Bay Packers offense to face plenty of adversity during the preseason as it lines up against a defense that seems far more settled. The four-time MVP quarterback believes that could prove beneficial in the long run. Rodgers says that taking some lumps early is “going to build some character.” The two-time reigning MVP is in a much different situation than last year. He's smoothed over his relationship with team management and is dealing with a new group of receivers now that All-Pro wideout Davante Adams is with the Las Vegas Raiders.

A Wisconsin judge says that a Republican-ordered, taxpayer-funded investigation into the 2020 election found “absolutely no evidence of election fraud,” but did reveal contempt for the state’s open records law by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and a former state Supreme Court justice he hired. Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn on Thursday awarded about $98,000 in attorneys’ fees to the liberal watchdog group American Oversight, bringing an end in circuit court to one of four lawsuits the group filed. Vos’s attorney says he'll recommend that Vos appeal the ruling. Vos ordered the probe last year under pressure from Donald Trump, who lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden in battleground Wisconsin by nearly 21,000 votes.

A senior Ethiopian official says the government is ready for talks with rival forces from the country’s northern Tigray region “anytime, anywhere” and without preconditions, in a notable break from the past. The announcement by the security adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came amid hopes for dialogue to resolve the East African nation’s deadly war that erupted in November 2020. The announcement came after a meeting with special envoys from the United Nations, the European Union and the United States. Movement toward talks has come after a cease-fire and the increasing delivery of desperately needed aid to long-blockaded Tigray.

After a six-month impeachment notice issued to the president by the opposition in the Nigerian Senate, their counterparts in the House of Representatives said they would follow suit. Buhari also met with Nigeria's security chiefs to discuss new strategies.

In “Hold on Baby,” King Princess’ second album, there’s something emotionally relatable for all her listeners. Mali's army says at least three civilians and 15 Malian soldiers have been killed in separate attacks in Mali’s central region,  the latest round of attacks as insecurity worsens in the West African nation. Army spokesman Col. Souleymane Dembele said two attacks Wednesday targeted Mali army positions in the center of the country, and the army fought back killing at least 48 assailants. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but they bear the mark of jihadi rebels linked to al-Qaida who are present in those areas and whose local leader, Amadou Koufa, sent a message a few weeks ago urging his fighters to intensify attacks against the Malian army.

Pope Francis has come face-to-face with a long-standing demand from Indigenous peoples during his Canada pilgrimage. They want him to formally rescind the papal decrees underpinning the so-called “Doctrine of Discovery” that seemingly legitimized the colonial-era seizure of Native lands and resources.Right before Mass began at Canada's national shrine on Thursday, protesters displayed a banner at the altar. It read “Rescind the Doctrine” in bright red and black letters. It's a reference to the 15th century papal decrees, or bulls, that provided European kingdoms the religious backing to expand their territories for the sake of spreading Christianity. Church officials insist the decrees have long since been superseded by others firmly asserting the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Italy's president is urging Italians to reinvigorate their democracy as the country notes the 100th anniversary of an attack that paved Benito Mussolini's path to power. President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday was commemorating a 1922 attack by fascist thugs on a farm cooperative building in the northern city of Ravenna. Mussolini took power in a march on Rome in October 1922. Mattarella called the Ravenna attack a “chapter of our history that would lead to the loss of freedom” for Italians with the start of Mussolini's dictatorship. He warned the country against fascism as Italy gets ready for an early parliamentary election on Sept. 25. Opinion polls indicate a far-right party with neo-fascist roots could win.

A leading human rights watchdog is urging Egyptian authorities to allow the family of a prominent activist serving a five-year sentence access to him. Amnesty International also reiterated calls on Thursday for the immediate release of Alaa Abdel-Fattah. It says his family members had not received any word from him and were told by prison officials that he is refusing to meet with them. The family had said earlier that Abdel-Fattah has been on a hunger strike for nearly 110 days to protest the conditions of his imprisonment. He was sentenced last December to five years on charges of spreading false news, a charge often used to sentence opposition and pro-democracy activists in Egypt.

China’s leaders have effectively acknowledged the struggling economy won’t hit its official 5.5% growth target this year. They said they will try to prop up sagging consumer demand but will stick to strict anti-COVID-19 tactics that disrupted manufacturing and trade. The announcement after a Communist Party planning meeting reflected the high cost President Xi Jinping’s government has been willing to incur to stop the virus in a politically sensitive year when Xi is expected to try to extend his term in power. The party promised to “strive to achieve the best results” but dropped earlier references to targets after the economy grew just 2.5% over a year ago in the first half.
