COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A man accused of raping and impregnating a 9-year-old Ohio girl who traveled to Indiana for an abortion was ordered held without bond Thursday by a judge who cited overwhelming evidence and the fact that he apparently is living in the U.S. illegally.

Gerson Fuentes, 27, faces two counts of raping the girl, who turned 10 before having the abortion in a case that has become a flashpoint in the national discussion about access to the procedure since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. He has pleaded not guilty.

An ailing manatee that was found and rehabilitated in Texas late last year is now in Florida after being flown from Texas on a cargo plane. The manatee was released into a bay near a wildlife refuge along the Gulf Coast this week. The manatee named TexasTeeMiguel was released Wednesday into Kings Bay in Crystal River, Florida. Late last week, TexasTeeMiguel flew on a DHL Express cargo plane in a custom, state-of-the-art container built specifically for manatees. In the container, the manatee rested on a foam bed and was covered in wool and space blankets to maintain a healthy body temperature. TexasTeeMiguel was misted with water under its blankets throughout the trip.

Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn on Thursday awarded about $98,000 in attorneys’ fees to the liberal watchdog group American Oversight, bringing an end in circuit court to one of four lawsuits the group filed. Vos’s attorney says he'll recommend that Vos appeal the ruling. Vos ordered the probe last year under pressure from Donald Trump, who lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden in battleground Wisconsin by nearly 21,000 votes.

The Hazelwood Police Department says in a Facebook post that officers were called after a semi-trailer truck was found abandoned. The department says evidence showed the truck had been submerged in floodwaters from the deluge of rain that hit the St. Louis area Tuesday. Officers found the truck driver's body Wednesday about a mile from the truck. Authorities on Tuesday had reported that a man in his 60s was found dead in St. Louis after his car was found covered in more than 8 feet of water.

State investigators looking into the death of a Georgia woman who fell out of a patrol car after being arrested have concluded that deputies never closed the car’s rear passenger-side door. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that 28-year-old Brianna Grier suffered significant injuries as she was being driven to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office on July 15 and died July 21. The release says Grier was arrested after Hancock County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in Sparta. Her family has hired prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who said in an emailed statement that Grier was taken into custody after a mental health crisis.
