It's cheaper than you think...

As the UK basks in its second heatwave of the summer, keeping cool remains a top priority. But how much does it cost to run a fan? And how much electricity do they consume?

According to Mattressman, fans generally require very little energy to run, with households looking at paying £2.93 per month (based on eight hours of usage and the UK average electric price) — coming in at £35.12 per year.

Sleeping in the heat is never easy, but you'll be pleased to know that it costs just 10p per night (0.097p) to keep your fan on, with the north east of England being the cheapest place to run it during the night (£2.80 per month). This is much cheaper than using a portable air con unit, which will add £14.88 each day to your energy bill.

If you want to work out exactly how much electricity your fan uses, the experts at Bionic recommend dividing the wattage (you will find this on the back of the fan or inside the instruction pamphlet) by 1,000 to covert to kilowatt-hours. It might sound complicated, but once have calculated the kilowatt-hours and know your energy rate, you can work out how much your fan costs in a time scale.

'It is no surprise that given the warm weather many of us will be using fans to cool off, but many of us have a worry that it will be breaking the bank. What is interesting though, is that it doesn't cost as much as you probably think to keep your fan on overnight,' says Louis Kerry, Marketing Manager at Mattressman.

'This is great news for all of us who rely on our fans to cool us down, as we can be rest assured that they are doing so at a low cost, despite the research showing that the price of this has doubled since 2021!'

Natalia Lachim, from Discount Code, adds: 'As fans are usually only used sporadically, you shouldn't see too much of an increase in your energy bill.'
